BMX truly flourished when the backyard game went national, and of course, international, in the hands of riders that took the sport beyond what we thought was possible.
These include people like Jimmy LeVan, whose tremendous and heartwarming full length feature can be watched here , and by the likes of Vert and X Games champion Mat Hoffman. For a local hero look no further than Mansour Al Safran , our OP BMX trickster, who exudes a special kind of irreplaceable cool as he freestyles with ease. My goal was to create a brand with a fresh perspective and my aesthetic on the sport. Don't get me wrong, as I respect what the contemporary brands of today have done for the sport, but at the same time feel like BMX has become homogenized and could be more inviting to new enthusiasts that could help grow the sport and the business of BMX.
Perhaps I'm being a little nostalgic but I remember when BMX was in its heyday there were many competing brands that had very different personalities which I personally thought was cool and exciting. Riders back then had huge allegiances to these brands and still hold them with fond memories even today! My plan for Ikonix is to create a contemporary and modern BMX brand with a fresh perspective and innovative products.
Ikonix won't be a throwback brand that lives in the past. As a contemporary designer, I strive to evolve creatively and will bring this evolution to Ikonix. My goal is to have elite riders on the team both in freestyle and later in BMX racing. Ikonix will be a high-end boutique brand that will offer framesets, handlebars, components and related BMX accessories but no complete bikes other than the limited edition FS1.
How did the distribution relationship with KHS come about and what does that mean for the future of Ikonix? Mike was receptive and kind enough to introduce me to Wen Hsieh, the owner of KHS bicycles, and from there a dialogue was started on how we might work together.
For Ikonix, KHS is ideal, as they will provide the manufacturing, purchasing, distribution and sales horsepower that I need to build my brand. For over 40 years, KHS has been in business and while they are not the largest distributor, they are big enough to be formidable, yet small enough to be nimble in order to make decisions without the layers of bureaucracy that you find in today's larger bicycle conglomerates. I prefer this type of arrangement where I deal directly with the owner of the company who can make decisions quickly.
What are your thoughts on the current state of BMX racing and freestyle? I think the athletic state of both BMX racing and freestyle is at the highest level ever.
When I attend events today, I am always blown away at what riders can do on their bikes and the complexity of the tricks they throw down. In racing I feel the same way as I watch riders compete on the huge supercross tracks of today. The riders today and over the years have taken our sport farther then I could have ever imagined possible.
I do think it would be helpful if more riders today could assist in growing BMX by being ambassadors for the sport. I believe this would bring more riders, more awareness and more sponsorship dollars to grow BMX for the future. New riders are the future of the BMX and with new enthusiasts the sport can flourish, which is advantageous for all involved. I would also like to see the BMX industry collaborate together to cultivate the sport, to insure that it is guided in the right direction to be healthy and prosperous for both participants and the business.
The economic health of the BMX business is important for all of us as brands that are profitable, to spend more on riders, teams, and sponsorships. Healthy brands also spend more on product development and marketing, thus building awareness to just how cool BMX is! How would you compare BMX in the late '70s and '80s with what's happening now both as an industry and as a sport?
