Why do mealworms have to be refrigerated

Then transfer the container to a refrigerator set at 45 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. The mealworms will go into a hibernated state but will continue to thrive in the environment. After a couple of hours, discard any leftover chunks and return the container back to the refrigerator.

Taking care of your feeder insects will help keep them healthy and in turn will lead to a healthier pet. The refrigerator is too cool for them. I keep both my mealworms and superworms on this bedding from "Professional Reptiles". When most of the bedding has turned into droppings, I either add some of the original stuff or sift out all the droppings and put in new bedding. This is easier to do with superworms since they're bigger.

Sometimes I lose tiny mealworms in the sifting process. In Europe you could do one of the following: Get a variety of grains and cereal and put them in the blender. They can eat whole grains, but it will be much easier for you to get them out of the bedding if the grain is ground up. OR Buy some chicken feed that does not contain diatomaceous earth. They completely demolish them! I feed superworms by dropping 1 at a time in front of the gecko.

For a very reluctant gecko, I hold the gecko and gently poke the superworm at the mouth until it bites the worm. I have a gecko that rarely eats in the winter and a few years ago he was losing a lot of weight. I used a hypodermic needle to poke the superworm, got some of the guts on the end of the needle and poked it gently into the gecko's mouth.

He didn't get much, but it did some good and he eventually started eating again. He's about to go into his annual winter fast, but he weighs 90 grams right now. Mealworms are a popular feeder insect for reptiles, bluebirds, chickens, fish, and many other animals.

They are high in protein and fat and are easy to maintain. Mealworms are available in 5 sizes from Timberline. Bulk mealworms are shipped in a box containing egg crate. The worms need to be transferred into a plastic container the quantity of worms determines the size of your container. Freezing mealworms will kill them. They can survive several months in the fridge. At room temp they will pupate and turn to beetles after weeks.

I keep my mealworms in the living room and they live so well up to today and also, I have a beetle in my container and 2 big mealworms that I hope are becoming pupa. Are you sure that is the best condition to keep mealworms? Have you experimented it before? Can I safely put my live meal worms in our food fridge without the risk of pathogens or bacteria transferring to the food we eat.

Thanks Liz. So thanks again for sharing your knowledge, some of us will put it to good use…. And thank you to those of you who answered the questions, once again, to something that had been previously asked and answered. Some people really do appreciate you! Liz, some people eat mealworms, they are actually a pretty healthy food if you can get over the taboo around eating insects.

Thanks for the tips. Does anyone know how to do that? Your email address will not be published. Keep them refrigerated The simplest solution is keep them in a refrigerator. However… There are somethings that the keeper needs to be made aware of regarding the mealworms.
