The organization that puts on the Shanghai Tunnels tours claims that that basement along with many others previously connected to the waterfront via a series of passages. Portland did have dual-level wharves on the Waterfront up until Harbor Drive was built, and such wharves would have allowed for basement access directly from the docks.
However, heavy rail on the streets and frequent flooding of basements would have precluded anything like underground dungeons or torture chambers from being practical in early Portland- they would have either caved in or been waterlogged. Lots of people are disappointed by this information. I find their sadness enjoyable. Shanghaiing did happen in Portland. Lots of it.
For the most part, shanghaiers got away with shady business the old fashioned way: By fixing the cops. I like horror movies, haunted houses, and even a ghost tour now and then. I am, however, also an intelligent human being who can tell reality from fantasy.
Through the years and through all these investigations, I feel as though I can play any key or any note now. To the crew, and Bagans in particular, a heightened sense of empathy has helped with personal haunting investigations. Just walking in there—you see the physical building, but if you were able to put on some interdimensional goggles, that hotel would have a lot more hallways, it would have a lot more doorways, and a lot more rooms.
But there are three locations in particular where the team vowed to never return. The first is the so-called Demon House , the Gary, Indiana, structure from the Ghost Adventures -adjacent spinoff documentary of the same name. It was here that a series of demonic possessions occurred, allegedly leaving team members—including Bagans—with vision problems. He eventually had the structure razed.
Over the years, Bagans and company have conducted hundreds of investigations—and have likely used an equal number of paranormal tools and technologies to assist them. How else are you supposed to capture those elusive specters? According to Bagans, they try not to leave anything up to chance. Before I get there, we have done a little bit of research on the nature of the hauntings, the history of the location, [and knowing] if anybody's been affected A lot of people in this field will have an experience first with a ghost, or what they think is a ghost, and then what they do is, like me, they want answers.
I didn't believe in this s I really didn't. You have to experience it first, and once you do, it changes everything. So what happened to you? A little over 10 years ago, I had a full-on spirit of a woman in my apartment. She started screaming my full name, Zachary, for seven straight nights after I moved into this old apartment building. And on the seventh night I support.
