I think you do need one, I've lost mine before and I've had to open another so i could buy my items at the till.. I'm sure they'll just sign you up for one at the till, think that's what we did when we forgot a card in the past. My mum used to have one when I was a kid, ive shopped in Matalan loads since becoming an adult and never used a card to shop there.

Additonally, they are entered into prize draws and sent birthday vouchers; if they spend over a certain amount in one year, they recieve a black card which increases their offers.
Cardholders are occasionally sent catalogues with information on new stock and sales, these catalogues often including money-off vouchers. It is also used to track purchases so can be used as an alternative to a receipt. I used to not really understand why Matalan had them but since working there, I do realise that people with cards do tend to save quite a bit of money when they have them.
